This 7 Day Uganda Rwenzori mountaineering safari allows you to explore the various peaks of Mt Rwenzori as you enjoy the beautiful outdoors and amazing scenery on the mountain. This hike is done on the Rwenzori central circuit and can be undertaken by fast and fit hikers because you will be covering long distances each day.

At 5,109 meters, Mountain Rwenzori is the second highest mountain in Africa. Its snow-capped throughout the year and offers amazing Uganda mountaineering safaris. These can be short hiking safaris or long hiking safaris that lead to the summit of the mountain. The Mountain offers amazing scenery, plant life, lakes and rivers.

7 Day Uganda Rwenzori mountaineering safari Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer from Kampala to Mountain Rwenzori.

After an early breakfast, our guide will pick you from your hotel and give you a short briefing about your mountaineering safari. You will depart Kampala using the Masaka highway. You will make a stop at the equator for a break. Here, you will have some photos and experiments to show the different hemispheres. We will continue and stop for lunch at the Igongo cultural center in Mbarara. We will drive through Queen Elizabeth national park and if we are lucky, we will spot some elephants and buffalo grazing by the side of the roads. We will head to Nyakalengija where we will spend the night in preparation for our great hike.

Day 2. Nyakalengija (1600m) to John matte hut (3420m)

On the second day of this 7 Day Uganda Rwenzori mountaineering safari, we will have an early breakfast in preparation for our great hike. We will go for a briefing at the Mountaineering offices and pick our hiking gear. The guides and porters will be ready and off we go. We will hike through the local villages, tropical forests, bamboo forests and montane forests into the alpine. We will have a lunch break at Nyabitaba hut before proceeding on the hike. We will go through the Kurt Schaffer Bridge, the conference between the River Mubuku and River Bujuku. We shall enjoy the scenic views of the mountain side on our Uganda mountaineering safari. On reaching John Matte hut, we will have diner and relax with the amazing views of Mount Rwenzori.

Day 3. John matte (3420m) to Elena hut (4563m)

On this day of this safari, we will depart John matte hut after breakfast. We will hike through the rocky areas as we cross rivers and streams. The peaks of Margherita and Alexandra are visible at this point of the hike. We will hike on to the bigo bogs enjoying the amazing plant life like groundsels, giant lobelia and everlasting flowers. We will proceed through the rocky terrain of Mount Stanley and finally reach Elena hut. Here, we will rest and spend the night.

Day 4. Elena hut (4563m) to Margherita (5109m) to Bujuku camp (3930m)

This is the part of the Uganda mountaineering safari that gets interesting. At 2am, we will get our headlamps on and hike through the rocky areas, using the ropes to guide us to Stanley glacier. Here, your crampons will be necessary. After the Stanley glacier, we will continue hiking until we reach the Margherita glacier which will lead us to the Margherita peak. This is the highest part of the mountain. We will take some photos and take some time to enjoy the view and enjoy the moment. We will then descend back to Elena hut, have some rest and lunch. Later, we will continue to Bujuku hut for a restful night and diner.

Day 5. Bujuku (3930m) to Nyabitaba hut (2660m)

Following a hearty breakfast, we will descend through the upper bigo bog and lower bigo bog to John matte hut. We will have lunch and some rest. Proceed to Nyabitaba hut where we will spend the night on this day of the 7 Day Uganda Rwenzori mountaineering safari.

Day 6. Nyabitaba back to Nyakalengija

On the last day on the mountain, we will have an early start as we descend from Nyabitaba hut to Nyakalengija. We will once again hike though the bamboo, tropical and montane forests before reaching Nyakalengija. On arrival, we will check into our hotel and relax after summiting the great mountain.

Day 7: Transfer to Kampala.

On the last day of this 7 Day Uganda Rwenzori mountaineering safari, we will bid farewell to our porters and guides and head back to Kampala through Fort portal. The drive is scenic and offers great views of the mountain you have just conquered. We will stop in Fort portal for lunch before proceeding to Kampala through Mubende. On arrival in Kampala, the guide will drop you at your hotel or the airport. This will mark the end of your 7 Day Uganda Rwenzori mountaineering safari.
